Suicide prevention for Master’s students in Psychology (Clinical specialisations)

After following this module, you will have the practical tools to enter the working field with knowledge, skills and confidence in order to identify suicidal behaviour and discuss it openly. At the end of this module, you will be able to: 

• describe the elements of the main explanatory models for suicidality and apply them to a case study and explain the development and course of suicidality according to the key models; 
• outline the CASE method and apply it during a case discussion; 
• recognize signs of suicidality in behavior and language and conduct an intake interview in a role-play scenario with a (fictitious) minor presenting with suicidal symptoms, effectively involving the parents and explaining their role; 
• explain and apply elements of psycho-education for clients with suicidal thoughts; 
• understand the limits of your own responsibility as a psychology student and know which competencies are required for treatment; 
• initiate a conversation about suicidality, support someone with suicidal thoughts in seeking professional help, and collaboratively create a safety plan; 
• identify and use at least two appropriate interventions when concluding an intake interview.
